Tips for Organizing & Maximizing Space!
List your items — furniture, boxes, electronics, seasonal gear, etc.
Label items by type or room
Label boxes clearly on multiple sides
Take photos of your packed unit for reference or insurance
Create a simple floor plan, note where key items are
Leave a walkway down the center so you can access everything
Keep items you’ll need access to near the front
When boxes are consistent in size it makes stacking them easier and safer
Use small boxes for heavy items and large boxes for light items
Plastic bins with snap lids are better than cardboard for long-term storage
Plastic wrap, furniture covers, bubble wrap, and moving blankets help protect surfaces
Pallets or tarps keep items off the floor and help with moisture protection
Place heavy items (appliances, furniture, books) on the bottom.
Stack lighter boxes on top — largest and heaviest boxes first, then smaller.
Stack boxes vertically to use the full height of the unit
Use shelving units or pallets to keep items off the floor, organized and accessible
Fragile Items
Use bubble wrap, blankets, or towels
Mark boxes FRAGILE and stack them on top
Furniture
Disassemble furniture (e.g., remove table legs, headboards)
Use drawers, dressers, and appliances for extra storage space (fill them with soft items like clothes or linens)
Cover furniture to prevent moisture
Avoid plastic covers as they trap humidity, use cloth breathable covers instead
Stand furniture upright (sofas, mattresses, tables) to save floor space
Store mattresses vertically with protection on both sides
Place large furniture and appliances along the back and sides
Long Term Storage Tips
Use a disc or cylinder lock — these are harder to cut
Do not store food, perishables or flammables
Consider moisture absorbers or silica gel packs
Cover items with breathable sheets (not plastic, which can trap moisture)
Use pallets or boards to keep items off the floor
Check your unit periodically
Make sure you contact info is always up to date so that the facility can reach you if there’s ever a maintenance or billing issue
Things To Check If You’re Storing A Vehicle
Door width & height: Make sure your vehicle plus mirrors, roof rack, etc will fit comfortably
Unit length & depth: You want space to open doors and maybe store gear alongside the car
Access type: Drive-up units are best for vehicles (vs units you walk in from an interior hallway)
Environment: Indoor units help protect from weather
Insurance: Ensure the vehicle is covered
